Wireshark Linux Lab

In this lab, we will be exploring the network monitoring program Wireshark on a Linux box. Before starting, make sure you are logged in with your campus-wide Windoze login and password, and that the machine is connected to the orange network.

To begin, boot the computer next to you into Windows and execute the command `ip addr output` in the Terminal Emulator (Accessories -> Terminal Emulator). This will display a list of network interfaces on the system. Take notes explaining as much as you can about what you see in this output. Specifically, identify which interface is being used by the computer.

The computers provided have multiple Ethernet NICs, so make sure that your machine is only plugged into the white Ethernet cable and not connected to any other networks.

Next, open a terminal window on one of the machines and boot it into the Xubuntu operating system from the flash drive. This will get you started with Wireshark.

To investigate the interface information stored on both Linux and Windows boxes, use the `ifconfig` command in Terminal Emulator to display the network interfaces on your Linux machine. Compare this output with the same command executed on a Windows box.

For this lab, I recommend that you record your answers using a Google Doc. Take notes on any differences or similarities you observe between the interface information stored on the two systems, and submit these notes as part of your lab submission.

By completing this lab, you will gain hands-on experience with Wireshark and understand how to use it to monitor network protocol behavior on both Linux and Windows systems.
